On the career management blog “JibberJobber,” blogger Jason Alba quotes blogger Mark Beckford (of the blog “Disruptive Leadership”), who offers this list of three recommended titles on networking:
Never Eat Alone (Keith Ferrazzi and Tahl Raz), How to Win Friends and Influence People (Dale Carnegie), and (drum roll please) The Go-Giver.
We wrote to thank him for mentioning our little book, and here’s what he replied:
I am even more honored to catch the attention of one of my favorite “little books.” I think your almost singular focus on the “giving” piece of networking was key for me. One short story:
I have a friend in China who is a recruiter who had just opened his own business recruiting attorneys in China. I asked him to connect me with some folks in his network. He gave me a few contacts.
Because I read your book, my mind initially went into thinking, “What can I help him with?”
I realized I had worked with an attorney who was a Chinese national who worked at a law firm in Washington, D.C., but split his time in Beijing, as he was an expert at working with the Chinese government. I figured he had a great attorney network in China and the U.S. and would be a great contact for my friend. I introduced them — and my friend then turned into a personal recruiter for me, introducing me to probably more than fifteen folks. And it made me feel good!
Thanks for putting out a great nugget of wisdom.
Thanks, Mark — we love these stories!
Why is the bald guy in a blue house smiling?
Yesterday I left a comment on Pat O’Bryan’s Blog. (Yes, he is the Pat O’Bryan of http://www.YourPortableEmpire.com). It is something I do quite regularly, but this time it felt different.
I was shocked at what had happened. I was amazed at the comment my fingers left. I thought it was a pretty good question. And Pat agreed.
Then he did something remarkable — something I and others still can’t believe. I am still shocked.
Less then 12 hours after the comment, he researched the answer, wrote down where to find the answer, how to find the answer, and then he posted it on his blog all for free.
If you have any desire to market a product online, or if you are having trouble marking your product, then I strongly urge you to visit Pat’s blog: https://patobryan.com/blog/?p=290.
Pat, this bald guy is forever grateful. I will always be your walking ambassador.

P.S. Seriously, go to his blog. He is a true Go-Giver.

Welcome, Brianna! 🙂
John – Thanks for re-posting my example. Hopefully everybody gets the same that I got out of the book, and makes the importance of the “giving” part of networking a habit.
